Here comes fun

and what could be the next big photo fad.

The Zink mobile printer lets you print business card size photos (2 in. x 3 in.) on photopaper or paper with a sticky back. It's small enough to fit in your pocket and is conveniently inkless (the name is an abbreviation of zero ink), so you don't have to worry about any mess. You can hook it up to your camera phone through a USB port or Bluetooth, and it's also compatible with the Pictbridge camera.

The Zink could be used as a mobile photobooth or become the next big party fad, like the Poloroid Izone camera once was. But it could also be used in the design world as a tool for ideation sessions and rapid prototyping.

It's not out yet! The Zink will be available later this year, and pricing information is not available. I'll keep you posted. :-)

five fun facts for friday

1. In almost every episode of Seinfeld there is a superman reference, be it visual or verbal.

2. In a study of 200,000 ostriches over a period of 80 years, no one reported a single case where an ostrich buried its head in the sand.

3. A pregnant goldfish is called a twit.

4. It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky.

5.It's impossible to lick your elbow. Not even with a super duper extra long tongue like this one. (c'mon try it, just try it)

Mink Island Getaway

Mink Island is situated in Chippewa Bay in the 1000 Islands.
(Mink is the small island inbetween the main land and Oak Island)

The family did a little winter "vacation" this past weekend. It was a balmy 26 degrees, got down to 15 at night. A wood stove and electric blankets kept us relatively warm. As did good company, good food, and a lot of wine.

Chippewa Bay was frozen as solid as black granite. (the ice was about a foot thick but you could look through it down to the river below)

Transportation out to the island was by snowmobile. It took 5 trips hauling wood, food, kids, adults, and a dog.

This is a picture of Honeymoon Island, situated a 100 yards or so off the right side of our dock.

Going into the 4th summer on Mink Island, I just learned the following Honeymoon island legend......

John Brown inquired about buying a small island. Found one near Oak Island. Bought it for $500.00 and built a small cabin on it. In the spring John Brown arrived with his bride, rented a skiff from George Forrester, loaded his provisions and new wife aboard. That was the last that was ever seen of either Brown or his wife. The skiff was found at George’s dock but nothing else was ever found.

Where did they go?

Why does everything smell like wet dog?

Wet woolen hats, soaked knit gloves, damp boots, and wet snow pants have a distinct odor to them and these aren't ingredients Chanel works with!

A textile professor at Syracuse University says "yarns often retain the oils from the animal hair used in their creation and when the wet fabric warms up, what's released into the air is the odor of that animal".

"If you wear one of those Irish wool sweaters, you'll smell sheep."

"Man-made fabrics produce their own man-made odor- even if it's cold outside, you're warm and when the fabric gets wet, what you smell is you"

So the odor from all those wet clothes I've been throwing in the dryer after boys snowblowing, shoveling, and sledding this week? It's sheep and boys, no dog.

Two for Tuesday

Two views of my camera fund.

Yes, I am saving for a new camera and this bank is one of my methods of saving. This is the spare change I have saved since Christmas (when I got this bank). I stoop to emptying coat pockets, cleaning under couch cushions, and picking up any spare change that makes its way into the laundry room (hey, it's fair game)

My other method of saving is to answer survey questions and give feedback on potential products and advertising for a major food company (kraft) in which I get amazon.com gift certifcates and so far, have $110.00 to spend there.

granted, it make take me awhile to get the camera of my dreams - a digital, slr - but I have narrowed it down to a canon or nikon and am doing some research.

anyone have an opinion on digital slr cameras?? feel free to share.

Now here's a twist.

Women choose, men can't refuse.

Traditionally, on the Island of Orango off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, it is the women who propose marriage and once they have, men are powerless to say no.

At the tender age of 14, a girl enters her chosen's grass covered hut and places a plate of steaming fish in front of him. Eating the fish, marinated in red palm oil, lets her know he accepts the proposal. No is really not an option though, to say no would be to dishonor his family.

But now the modern world is starting to encroach upon the secluded island. Men are running after women. Traditionalists say for a man to go so far as to openly propose marriage is dangerous. The choice of a woman is much more stable. With men choosing, divorce has become common.

Hmmmmm.

Leonardo DaVinci

I'm taking a drawing class on Monday nights with my friend Vanessa.
Yesterday I was trying my hand at drawing facial features.
The eyes came out ok.
The nose, eh, acceptable.
But the lips? I spent HOURS on the lips to no avail.
Then I remembered that it took Leonardo DaVinci 10 years to draw the Mona Lisa's lips.
I felt better.

Did you know?

That besides taking 10 years to paint Mona Lisa's lips, he drew her without eyebrows in the painting (or maybe she didn't have any?)

That he could write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time.
That he invented scissors.

Lady Lake Florida

For those of you who know my mom lives in Lady Lake, FL, I am happy to say she is fine and her immediate neighborhood is unscathed and saw little damage. Despite the busy phone lines we've spoken twice today. She has not been able to leave the area because of downed trees and power lines so has only seen what we get to see on the news.
Thanks much for the phone calls and emails.
