Speaking of birds and their mates.....

this little birdie is looking for something, or someone. she has been sitting outside my office window at home for 2 weeks now. she alternates between the hanging pot to the small tree outside my window. she leaves her perches to knock on my window starting early in the morning and ends at twilight. she detects any movement and won't let me get near enough for a close up shot. she's a beautiful wild canary - maybe looking for her mate? cause I haven't seen him around at all.

that bird aint lonely! IT'S HUNGRY! FEED THE POOR THING! And once fed, send its picture to Rita! And how do you know it is a "she" if you have not been able to get that close?

It would be sad if the mate was caught by a predator or something.

The dude bird probably flew into a window and smashed his beak, or found a bird with a bigger, juicier breast. Just sayin'...

R -I put a window feeder out but that bird is not interested in food! I think it is a female because of the colorings. I ordered two bird books this week so I'll find out. who the hell is Rita?

Trav, my thoughts exactly.

Matt-man, I bet some hussy bird shook a tail feather at him.

Do you read your own posts?

"Rita Oenhauser, 34, who runs a bird sanctuary at Schoenefeld just outside Berlin, said: "I realised there was a gap in the market because I had so many people asking me about finding a partner for their birds."

male or female? hard to tell in your photo but it looks too brightly colored to be a female.

"The American Goldfinch (also known as a wild canary) male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter months, while the female is a dull yellow-brown shade which brightens only slightly during the summer. The male displays brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate."

Hmm, my guess is that a couple of wild canaries (aka goldfinches] have decided that your yard is the perfect spot to raise a family:

"Its breeding season is tied to the peak of food supply, beginning in late July, which is relatively late in the year for a finch... Once a male has found a mate, he selects a territory, marking the boundaries by warbling as he flies from perch to perch..." [from Wikipedia]

Last spring, we had a family of robins come to be in the hanging plant the kids gave me for (ironically!) Mother's Day. Right on the front porch, the kids saw firsthand how amazing nature really is. We considered it a gift. I hope you are so blessed, too!

Hi Julie! your mom's gardens are beautiful!

V, thanks for the info. I would love it if they made a nest in one of my planters! at camp, something made a nest in one of the birdhouses I painted and hung this year! the eggs have already hatched and they've flown the nest.
