So what's the deal here?

Forgive the length of this post but I thought this might be of interest.

One of the boys came home last week and told me about a new drug going around school. Not your typical snort it, smoke it, swallow it kind of drug. Instead, a digital drug.

What are those you ask? I asked the same and he wasn't quite sure. "Some kind of sound thing you listen to and it makes you feel like you're on drugs"

Hmmm, so I did a little research and here is what I found -

Mind alteration through combinations of binaural beats and tones.
Based on a scientifc theory that's been around since 1839 and has been used for meditation, relaxation, or self-hypnosis.

There are many articles about binaural beats and you can get the basics here but what it boils down to is this - when two different tones are played in opposite ears, a beating sensation is created in the brain. This beating sensation is the effect of the conflicting electrical signals in your brain’s wiring. Stereo headphones are a necessity when trying to experience binaural beats because they allow a different frequency to be played in each ear. In experiments over the last century, binaural beats have been shown to create different states of consciousness within an individual. These states of consciousness are the result of different brain waves that can be induced in a person’s psyche through the beats.

I've gathered, through brief research on the net, there are those that support this theory and those that say it is bunk and has just a "placebo" effect.

I found a few websites who offer CDs of binaural beats as sleep aids, stress relief, and smoking cessation aids.

and then there is I-Doser

I-Doser markets these binaural beats and tones as "drugs"

To name a few-
Anesthesia
Cocaine
Crystal Meth
Ecstasy
Heroin
Marijuana

And there are other, non drug related, beats available-
lucid dreaming
french roast
orgasm

You purchase and download your "high" of choice from I-Doser.
You can also purchase CDs of multiple doses.
Grab your MP3 or CD player, plug in your headphones and listen to the binaural beats/tones, supposedly getting "high" from whatever "drug" you are listening to.

I-Doser lets their users know (on their FAQ page) that "I-Doser has received many emails from users who have had great experiences enhancing their recreational drug taking with doses supplied with I-Doser"

GREAT.

they also tell you how to make your "high" last longer and how to intensify the effects.

AND they provide testimonials:

"play the demerol just before bed, it writes you off!! fire alarm went off for about a hour and i couldnt move amazin experience, just paralyses me to the bed! word of warning to everyone else be careful when your on it"

YIKES! not what I'd want my teenager experiencing.

So does anyone have any thoughts, feedback or insight into this?
Is this just hype or is it something parents should be concerned about?
I'm still digging.

I havent heard about this so I am of no help here. But I will be looking into it, for good or bad it sounds interesting. Cheers Lisa.

thanks Matt-man! no one I've talked has heard of this yet the kids have heard of it.

Terrific: Yet another way our kids can mess themselves up. I've never heard of it. Kinda gives new meaning to the expression "beating one's brains out."

Cate never heard of it and said "it sounds stupid". But of course, I'm stupid to her too.

Why don't you just download something and "take" it. I'll try the "orgasm" and let you know how that works out.

Seriously, I think it's a bunch of shit created and hyped by the guys selling the downloads for money. If it sound too good to be true, it usually is...

vanessa, somehow I don't think we need to worry too much about this with our kids.

Otto, that seems to be the consensus I'm getting. The kids think it's weird and aren't too interested. I have some doses on my computer I was thinking about trying. I'll keep you posted. Let me know if you end up trying any.

Hmmmm I'm going to check around with Mom's "in the know". I'll either post it or get back to you. Very disturbing.

I find the whole idea of selling a form of "legal" drugs to kids apalling, but as a marketing technique, it all sounds like a modern variation on "White Noise" which has been in use and around for decades. So other than the association with drugs, it probably isn't dangerous unless you are expecting to be interrogated in a back room somewhere.

"White noise can be used to disorient individuals prior to interrogation and may be used as part of sensory deprivation techniques. White noise machines are sold as privacy enhancers and sleep aids and to mask tinnitus. White noise CDs, when used with headphones, can aid concentration by blocking out irritating or distracting noises in a person's environment."

One mom..."in the know" thinks it's a bunch of bunk...physically CAN'T work! That people will do anything to make a buck. Maybe check snopes.com?

Lisa Ryan said...

Julie, I did try snopes but nothing came up. thanks for checking!

Hi Jamie, me too! and there is a lot of white noise present as well as the beats.

A few other people responded via email with similar experiences or variations:

I have experienced an almost euphoric sensation while listening to Tibetan Healing Bowls. I am not surprised to hear that they are marketing sound bites as drugs. Sounds are very powerful. It makes me think of the movie Dune when a single word could kill.

and

a bit scary....a bit interesting...hmmmmm

I have heard a bit about lucid dreaming, and have used some version of this stuff for relaxation, which induced/allowed/resulted in sleep.

Had a physcology professor who was into this stuff and would lend out tapes. Also loved sensory deprivation chambers....closed chamber, no light/absolute darkness, bath filled with epsome salt......very cool stuff.

I agree with julie. I tried the "free" alcohol for 10 minutes and other than the annoying sound, got a little disoriented and had ringing in my ears.

I remember the first few times I smoked a cigarette, I got a "buzz" too - that sucked me into a 20 year addiction. One that i was unable to successfully quit until I got Cancer at 40. Gee, that was fun.

Although I respect the capitalistic way of life, I think we all have a responsibility to NOT do it at our kids expense. Ring tones are one thing...

Otto, I think Captain Morgans would be more fun. and I am glad to hear you quit smoking (and are a cancer survivor)
Hopefully it's just a BS fad that the kids won't get sucked into and this too shall pass.

Hey Lisa- I asked Gary Nicholas.. never heard of it.. had no interest in it either.. So thats good. I agree with Otto .. sounds like a guy trying to make money on downloads..

BUT.. I think Pinot( my dog) is very interested. Might be like puppy uppers or doggie downers..????

Lisa Ryan said...

Good to hear!
Do not put the headphones on Pinot. He does not need any doggie uppers!

What will they think of next? Scary thought!!!

ok, now that's funny - using it on the dogs! maybe i can test it on our cats one night. how about the demerol one. if it will keep them on the bed for at least 6 hours, then we will can all sleep without being awoken to cat's running the hallways!

Yes, they should. I've never tried the recreational doses but if they work as well as the stimulent ones I've been trying; coffee equavelent or beta brainwave enhancement (sposed to help with concerntration and such) or the anxiety assistants; calm me or content, then as a parent you're in trouble.

Not to blame you or anything but alot of parents are far more behind in knowledge of technology, and, even more unfortunate, the internet, then what is safe in order to monitor your teens. The internet is a dangerous place especially because of this factor. It isn't governed as easily as real life because it's harder to put one law on everything as the internet is based in many different countries with many different laws.

As these binueral pulses are new and not recognised by the law as official drugs yet your thirteen yer old can purchase them and download them http://www.i-doser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2073&sid=be108e8ab043f8d217ff6423a6b28053

Kids use this stuff in school http://www.i-doser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=10346&sid=a98f4e610f2679f80f0aef3c483af3d5

Your children could be using this stuff during sleepovers with such heavy doses such as A-Bomb, Toad, anesthesia and Coccain! If your unsure about it all working check out the i-doser forums and you'll see alot of people have gotten it to work. http://www.i-doser.com/forum/

Point being: if these things work then parents are in alot of trouble and so are their kids.

Oh and by the way, when you (all freely) download the i-doser player and sign up with their shop and forums, you get a total of 6 i-doser doses that by the latest player can be played over and over again. Not all of these doses are bad but the two that I deleted were alcohol and tranquil cos it looked a bit iffy. Here is the prescription for alcohol

Alcohol / Recreational (Moderate) / 35 Minutes / Liquor. Spirits. Beer. Wine. Alcohol is one of the most common strong psychoactives used by humans. It has a long history of use and its intoxicating effects are well studied and documented: relaxation, mood lift, happiness, giddiness, talkativeness, lowered inhibitions, reduced social anxiety, and analgesia. Our alcohol dose is like shot gunning five glasses of gin, in force. The effects come on strong, but mellow fast, and ease into a condition of relaxation flightiness and overexcitement. Some have even experienced pure drunkenness from a single dose. Best of all, no hangover.

thanks for the info anonymous. It's good to hear from someone that's tried it.
I thought, at first, you might be running an ad for i-doser as you put three links to the i-doser site in your post.
as for my kids and the teens they know, so far all the feedback I've had is - "so what, not interested, kinda weird"
that's not to say I am still not concerned. it's on my radar.
