Two for Tuesday

This little guy, dubbed Rocky, has been making an appearance after dinner on occasion. Granted, he wasn't invited, but we really didn't mind 'cause he's pretty darn cute.

A little peace please.

It's been one of those days.
I am need of a peaceful moment.
Breathe in, breathe out.

Ahhhhhhh.

This peaceful moment brought to you by the St. Lawrence River.

Mink Island Getaway

Mink Island is situated in Chippewa Bay in the 1000 Islands.
(Mink is the small island inbetween the main land and Oak Island)

The family did a little winter "vacation" this past weekend. It was a balmy 26 degrees, got down to 15 at night. A wood stove and electric blankets kept us relatively warm. As did good company, good food, and a lot of wine.

Chippewa Bay was frozen as solid as black granite. (the ice was about a foot thick but you could look through it down to the river below)

Transportation out to the island was by snowmobile. It took 5 trips hauling wood, food, kids, adults, and a dog.

This is a picture of Honeymoon Island, situated a 100 yards or so off the right side of our dock.

Going into the 4th summer on Mink Island, I just learned the following Honeymoon island legend......

John Brown inquired about buying a small island. Found one near Oak Island. Bought it for $500.00 and built a small cabin on it. In the spring John Brown arrived with his bride, rented a skiff from George Forrester, loaded his provisions and new wife aboard. That was the last that was ever seen of either Brown or his wife. The skiff was found at George’s dock but nothing else was ever found.

Where did they go?

The Bonfire

The fire itself can put it out, and that by burning out,
and before it burns out it will have roared first
and mixed sparks with stars,
and sweeping round it with a flaming sword
made the dim trees stand back in wider circle—
from the bonfire by Robert Frost

Going to the river tommorrow.
The whole family (and then some) will be there.
Haven't been all together since July.
Probably the last time at camp until next spring
There's going to be full moon.
Clear, cold starry nights.
Did someone say bonfire?

Happy Labor Day

and that's what it was, a labor day!

The river was so low this weekend there was a lovely rockbed available for the picking. I had many hands to help pull and transport the rock. Thanks to children, cousins, and cousins' children camp now has many new rock lined flower beds.

A sliver of silver

A sliver of silver sun is about all we saw this weekend.
It rained most of the weekend and the river had the blues.

Blues in the Bay that is.

It was a perfect weekend for a some soulful blues and local artist Roosevelt Dean knew how to belt them.

And from that day, o'er hill and glade
Thru those old woods, a path was made.

Sailboats

Took a little boat trip into Brockville, Ontario today.
It is a pretty town with a local yacht club.
We were treated to a sailboat race at dusk.

Shooting stars and other fun snippets

It's been such a whirlwind of activity these past 3 weeks.
Most of the activity has been work related with little snippets of fun added inbetween and after.

Snippets of fun like

Spending time with friends (old and new)
Seeing Niagara Falls again
Breakfast at Stella's Diner
Sunday morning flea market
Laughs at Kelly Cole's Improper
Scrabble by the lake
Pastabilities for dinner x2
Pool games won and lost
Dinosaur BBQ for biker watching
Boatrides
Shooting stars*
Sangria and swimming
Bonfires big and small
S'mores
Castle cruising
Backgammon & rain on a tin roof

*shooting stars -
you must keep your eyes glued to the starry skies in order to catch one (at least I did).
Not really a tough thing to do when the sky itself is such a light show of stars to begin with.
Catching sight of one is well worth the wait and the neck ache.
FYI - A shooting star is not really a shooting star.
A shooting star is really a small piece of rock or dust that hits Earth's atmosphere from space. It moves so fast that it heats up and glows as it moves through the atmosphere. Shooting stars are what astronomers call meteors. Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere before they reach the ground. However, once in a while a meteor is large enough that some of it survives and reaches the Earth's surface.

An idyllic retreat

This went up on the island last year.
I have yet to see anyone use it.
It is so peaceful and inviting.
I want to see someone take a book and chair and go read in it for the afternoon.
Or hang a hammock in it and nap.
Or sit in it at night and watch the moon on the water.
Or watch fireflies from it.
On the other hand, maybe it is a special secret meeting place
and that is why I haven't seen anyone there.
What is the story behind this idyllic retreat?
