Coffee was once grown mostly in shaded areas; today many growers are producing higher-yielding “sun coffee.” This practice requires extra pesticides and herbicides, can promote soil erosion, and reduces the habitat available to migratory songbirds including wood thrushes, tanagers, flycatchers, and Honduras orioles.
do your part: To support growers who use sound farming and harvesting practices, look for the USDA Organic and Bird Friendly symbols on the coffee package, or for a clear statement that the coffee is shade-grown.

P.S. Coffee is the second largest U.S. import after oil. Coffee drinkers have the potential to make a huge impact on the environment and economies of coffee growing nations.

I wonder what kind of coffee places like Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's and other non-coffee retailers use! That would be another place to pressure for using smarter better coffee!
And DO NOT get me started on Starbucks!
Dunkin Donuts espresso drinks are made from fair trade beans but I'm not sure about regular coffee.
Starbucks (gak)offers fair trade beans but they do not offer it as a daily choice unless you request it.
interesting...
I will definitely keep this in mind Lisa - thanks. Take care and have a good evening. Kellan
R, I found out today Panera doesn't use shade grown beans.
Wow...very interesting.
Very educational. This must be why I'm starting to see more information about where the coffee beans are from when I go to coffee houses around here.
